I qualified in Medicine from Nottingham University in 1983. Since then I have worked in many different Specialities including General Practice and Psychiatry; but in the last few years my work has been in the sexual health and gynaecology areas.
My interest in Herbal Medicine stemmed from seeing patients with pre-menstrual syndrome and menopausal problems, whom I could not help with my conventional approach. Either the patient had tried all the available options or had unacceptable side effects. It was great to be able to offer an effective alternative. I also have personal experience of the withdrawal of conventional treatment for
allergies, and
replacement with herbal medicine.
The longer consultations in Herbal Medicine allow the practitioner to really understand the patient’s problem in the context of the patient’s whole body, lifestyle and diet. The advice and treatment can therefore be holistic.
Many Doctors are sceptical about Herbal Medicine forgetting that many of the medicines they use, eg morphine, aspirin and digoxin, came originally from plants.
Being qualified in both disciplines allow me the ability to let patients know all their treatment options.
